“The single most powerful asset we all have is our mind. If it is trained well, it can create enormous wealth in what seems to be an instant.” This one line from the book, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert T. Kiyosaki reveals why I am interested in De La Salle University. De La Salle University is known for unleashing the beast inside you with your greatest potential. It is evident in the field of volleyball for producing world-class talents like Majoy Baron and Dawn Macandili as well as in the field of business like John Gokongwei, the chairman of JG Summit Holdings. Furthermore, besides knowing this university for its excellency in molding great talents (in academics and sports), DLSU is also known for its healthy education and social environment. Based on the word of mouth, the instructors, the administration, the university as a whole is very much hands-on and understanding to its students. With these said, it came to my realization that I would like to offer my potential to this university, to be trained, and to become the best. As great people would say, the great fire of success started from a single spark of potential.

When filling up the application process, I chose the degrees that belong in the business industry as I felt my personality and myself, as a whole, align in it. I considered taking the degrees, Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, Business Management, and Entrepreneurship as I weigh the career services and work opportunities offered by these degrees after college—their versatility and adaptability in changing environments—and also their contribution to the economy of the country and its people. Most especially, my capabilities and interest are in line with these degrees.

Speaking of capabilities, these capabilities of mine was tested two years ago. The year 2020 has been a tough year for everyone but it has been tougher to me. Our province, Catanduanes, was hit weekly by three strong typhoons namely Quinta, super typhoon Rolly, and Ulysses in a span of three weeks. Withstanding these despite having little storage of food to share and to be able to offer a shelter for our neighbors who were senior citizens and kids, and kept them safe during those times was something fulfilling to me.

With the experiences I gained with unexpected yet naturally occurring events, I believe my adaptability skills would hold great value in my studies considering the uncertainties happening today. Furthermore, me, being a strategic thinker, I’ve been able to have this cognitive adaptability skills where I can provide solutions to unexpected problems that may arise. I have a pretty work ethic and my time management skills are on the next level.

These skills of mine that will help me become successful in my studies and life were developed with the help of volleyball. Through volleyball, I have developed my skills in managing and leading a team. I can say that my leadership style is more of “members first before me”. I believe when working with a team especially when you are the leader, it is critical that your people can relate to you. I made sure that the ideas, suggestions, and recommendations of my teammates (people I lead) should be heard. I am an observant leader. I assess the strengths and weaknesses of my people and manage them to work on areas that will make them shine and/or improve. I make my working environment as light as possible to avoid them feeling like they’re carrying a burden in their obligations.
