Homework is a Big Waste of Time Persuasive Essay Example

Is homework beneficial or does it just waste time and give students more worries? Homework in high school is equivalent to 2 whole school days and that doesn’t count the grading part and that's every week. Giving students too much homework can be harmful to their mental and physical health. Not only that but students have a life outside of school and some families can't afford the materials needed for their child to do homework at home. Most people think homework is effective but it only causes stress and doesn’t help students learn the way they should.

Homework causes stress, mental health problems, and physical health problems. An article called “Homework” states, “82% of respondents said that they were “often or always stressed by schoolwork.” Even when outside of school kids are focused on getting their work done and some may need help and ask questions that they can’t just ask their parents. They should be able to relax and not do homework as soon as they get home. In the same article it also says “High-achieving high school students say too much homework leads to sleep deprivation and other health problems such as headaches, exhaustion, weight loss, and stomach problems.” If kids are too focused on doing their homework they won’t have time to just sit back and relax. Most kids also get stuck on a question which causes them to get distracted and forget to do simple necessities. Such as sleep, eat, and have good hygiene. Students shouldn’t have to worry about “learning” outside a building that makes you learn for 7 hours straight every day.

Many students go to schools because they’re free and provide all the materials they need to get a good education. But some parents can’t afford these materials for their students already, so having them come home and do homework with things they don’t have or can’t afford is unfair, and homework doesn’t help as much as people say it does. In the article “Homework” it says “nearly half reported there had been times they were unable to complete their homework due to lack of access to the internet or a computer, sometimes resulting in lower grades. '' Teachers and schools just have this expectation that kids have everything they need at home and can do anything they get asked. That's not the case, many students come from poor families and can’t help that. Giving a student a lower grade if they tell you they don’t have the materials they need seems very unbalanced compared to the students who do have the materials needed. In the same article it informed “Temple University professor Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek, PhD, says that homework is not the most effective tool for young learners to apply new information: “They’re learning way more important skills when they’re not doing their homework.” “ This statement is correct because homework is just a review of the work they do in class and most students don’t pay attention to the questions or things they’re reading, they’re just worried about getting it done and that’s all that matters to them. This can lead to them cheating and not caring about what they’re learning.

There are many effects from kids doing homework, like keeping kids mind fresh but some may argue homework is a waste of time and it doesn’t teach kids to do what they’re supposed to do. Doing homework 24/7 doesn’t let them have that. In the article “Homework” it said “They are also more likely to have to work after school and on weekends, or look after younger siblings, leaving less time for homework.” People, including kids, have busy lives outside of school. Not only is homework taking away that time, some people put their priorities first and that gives them less time to do homework.

Overall, Homework is a big waste of time, firstly it causes mental and physical health problems. Secondly, most people don’t have the right material to complete the homework being assigned and finally, homework doesn’t help kids learn/understand work as much as people say it does. So don’t just give kids homework for them to “learn”, teach them until they understand.
