The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Analysis Essay Example

Walter Mitty, the main character in James Thurber’s fictional story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” , daydreams and portrays many different imaginative scenarios in his head as he goes throughout his days. His wife, known simply as Mrs. Mitty often clashes with him since his daydreams tend to disrupt his relationship with her. His daydreams vary, from being in a hydroplane in the Navy, to potentially saving someone from dying in an operating room. In this short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, the character Walter Mitty can make a great dinner companion because his creative imagination and eccentric personality makes him an enthralling person.

To begin with, Mitty’s peculiar personality sometimes upsets others and he comes off as a bit airheaded, but his imagination seems very fun. For example in paragraph 3 the text states, “Not so fast! You’re driving too fast!’ , said Mrs. Mitty. ‘What are you driving so fast for?’ ‘ Hmm?’ said Walter Mitty.” It is observed that Mitty was unknowingly speeding as he daydreamed, which upset his wife. This shows that Mitty’s behavior can be off putting towards others, however it can be argued that his behavior can also be exciting since he dreamt of conducting a hydroplane and his crew while in the Navy.

Furthermore, his imagination is very engaging as shown in paragraph 5. “ He drove around the streets aimlessly for a time, and then he drove past the hospital on his way to the parking lot. ‘It's the millionaire banker, Wellington McMillan,’ said the pretty nurse. ‘Yes?’ said Walter Mitty, removing his gloves slowly.” This depicts how his imagination can quickly form scenarios in his head. Moreover, this shows how he can make a good dinner companion, as his eccentric personality can be very enjoyable in regards to imagination and entertainment.

At last, Walter Mitty’s creativity when it comes to imagination can be very entertaining since he can come up with very expressive ideas. Although he does seem a little ignorant towards others, he appears to find release when daydreaming and creating wild scenarios. Therefore, his abnormal way of thinking can make him a very good entertaining dinner companion since he is a very creative person and good entertainer.
