Canada would be an excellent example of an ideal democratic society. Through its policies, every citizen, no matter their faith, gender, social status or other differences, is treated equally. Canada's ethnically diverse population shows how open and multicultural it is. Canada has three main political ideologies, Socialism, Liberalism and Conservatism. Socialism is located at the left of the political spectrum; liberalism is more in the center of the political spectrum, and conservatism is at the spectrum's right. However, some of the ideologies are not as radical in Canada as it is in other countries such as conservatism when compared to the United States. In the article “What immigrants should know before coming to Canada,” the author shows all three ideologies through his opinions on what an immigrant should expect when coming to Canada. The following paragraphs will show how the author revealed the three main ideologies through his views on an immigrant's duties and what one should expect when coming to Canada.

The narrator shows socialist elements, such as believing that everyone is treated equally and how society is more important than the individual. The author shows socialist elements when he states that in Canada, people are treated equally regardless of their differences through policies. A fundamental socialist belief is that everyone is to be treated equally irrespective of their differences. Also, socialism does not believe in a class hierarchy, and one group is not favoured over another, which Canada does not do. Another socialist element is when the author stated that “An immigrant should never expect Canada to sacrifice or weaken its democratic laws to accommodate cultural practices incompatible with its values.” This shows a socialist element because a fundamental belief in socialism is for the government to have lots of control and power, and it focuses on society over the individual. As the author would rather an immigrant conform to society rather than follow their native cultural practices if they are looked down upon or restricted by the government. The author's beliefs that everyone should be treated equally regardless of their differences and how he favours society over the individual shows key elements of socialism.

Liberal elements are shown by the narrator when he states that “as long as a request is reasonable,” the government may allow exceptions for mandatory laws. A part of the article that shows a liberal element is when Hindu priests were allowed to be only screened by male security guards when choosing the gender to be screened by in the airport was not allowed. This shows elements of the liberal ideology, which is reason and tolerance. As their request to be screened by male-only guards was reasonable even if they were not allowed to choose. The author discussing how a mandatory law was disregarded when given a reasonable request shows reason as a key element in the liberal ideology.

Conservative elements are shown by the author when he states that every citizen has personal duties towards their countries and how he can express his opinions because of his individual freedom. The author said how new immigrants “must know what their obligations as Canadian resident/citizen would be”  this showed a conservative element as the conservative ideology believes in patriotism and loyalty towards one's country. Showing support for one’s country can contribute to “national safety, stability and social harmony, and not conflict.” Another element of Conservatism is when the author concluded his article stating that his second-best gift is to give his opinion “no matter how politically incorrect they may be.” The author's statement displays a critical element of conservatism as the ideology believes in individual freedom and citizens' ability to express themselves. As expressing one's opinions without repercussions from the government is an example of individual liberty. Key elements of conservatism are shown when the author states how citizens should support their country, which shows patriotism and his support for freedom of speech which is a type of individual freedom.
