Gatsby’s quest leads us from friendship to love, crime, and even death. Gatsby reveals that obtaining the American dream of wealth and success won’t back the past nor change the future, based on the love story between him and Dasiy.

InIn the first half of the book, Gatsby is a wealthy man and host of many big parties and social events. He is seen as mysterious and even dangerous because people don’t know what he does for a living. His relationship with Daisy is what motivates him and the hope she will live her husband (Tom) for him." I'm going to fix everything just the way it was before," he said, nodding determinedly. "She'll see." this quote shows his dedication to having the past with his current successful life. This contributes to the theme of also shows his naiveté and optimism through the American dream.

In the second half of the book, We learned where Jay Gatsby started earning his big profit. His hope and optimism are also broken by Daisy’s little effort to bring back the past love. Dasiy is afraid of leaving tom providence of old money and a good life but admits to loving Gatsby. "Oh, you want too much!" she cried to Gatsby. "I love you now—isn't that enough? I can't help what's past." She began to sob helplessly. "I did love him once—but I loved you too.".Daisy shows the superficial side of the American dream by not being willing to give up her giving up her status as old-money royalty to become the wife of a gangster.

Fitzgerald uses Gatsby to offers up various themes of power, greed, betrayal of the American dream. None is more well developed than that of social stratification. It is revealing that the American dream optimism is not the right path of retreating to the past. Unveiling. at first, the American dream about standing for independence and the ability to make something of one's self with hard work, but it ends up being more about materialism and selfish pursuit of pleasure.
