Nature Within the Perspectives of Muir and Wordsworth Essay Example

Nature is a beautiful place, birds chirping, beautiful flowers, and swaying trees. There is peace and serenity around. The nice, fresh air fills one’s lungs. Nature is a beautiful place to be appreciated. Nature gives each of us different feelings and perspectives. Wordsworth and Muir both appreciate nature and describe their relationships with nature using descriptive words. Wordsworth views nature as comforting and uplifting by using descriptive words and imagery, while Muir views nature as something beautiful by using imagery and his thoughts. 

William Wordsworth uses descriptive words and imagery to describe nature as something comforting and uplifting. According to the poem, “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” it says, “The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:  A poet could not but be gay.” Here, the author uses words like glee, gay, and danced to show happiness and joy. At the beginning of the poem, the poet is sad and lonely. As it progresses, the daffodil’s dance uplifts him.  The poem also says, “A poet could not but be gay.  In such a jocund company:” This shows Wordsworth is happy in the presence of nature. 

John Muir uses imagery and his thoughts to illustrate the beauty of nature. According to the essay, “Calypso Borealis” by John Muir says, “But when the sun was getting low and everything seemed most bewildering and discouraging, I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of a stream, growing not in the ground but on a bed of yellow mosses in which its small white bulb had found a soft nest and from which its one leaf and one flower sprung.”  The use of descriptive words illustrates the beautiful flower shows that he finds the beauty and hope in nature.  The essay, “Calypso Borealis” also says, “Storms, thunderclouds, winds in the woods—were welcomed as friends.” This illustrates that he feels safe and calm around nature. 

In conclusion, John Muir and William Wordsworth convey their relationships with nature by utilizing figurative language and their feelings.  The use of figurative language in both author’s works help bring their message across. Wordsworth uses more of imagery and descriptive words to convey his feelings in the poem, “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.” Muir uses his thoughts to show his love towards nature. Clearly, both authors show their relationships through amazing ways.
