Money and materialism are worthless themselves because it blinds too many people in real life. Many of these people know that someone has to die in order for money to come. In this film, I have seen how money can easily blind someone and not realize they have loved ones that take to opportunity to try to get them something for everybody. In this film, the family has loved but Walter didn’t see that and only saw the check. Walter sees how the white officer treated him with the nice rich car and when he saw that he knew this is how he doesn’t want to be treated instead of a rich man who has money and power. This theme is important because this also happens in real life many people use checks that are from a family member who passed or try to get written on a will just to earn money and buy a luxurious life.

Walter, he’s our big character in this theme because not only does he work hard he’s not grateful about the job he has and he wants to make more money than he makes now he wants to give his wife material items and home. Walter is a character who is blinded and smart but also crazy and will do anything just to expand. He is willing to expand his social class and make it better for his family and just to be treated like other rich men and make business and talk about millions of dollars in the back of a bar. Walter-” No – it was always money, Mama. We just didn’t know about it.”-page75. Walter says life is about money and it was just hidden from them. Money, in this case, is needed but isn’t life when money comes from your hard work you feel great but for some its just important to get the life of luxury and desire. “Man I trusted you, that money comes from my father’s flesh” is a sentence this character said but this chapter has regrets when it comes to feeling lost with no money although it’s gone mama knows her boy should be forgiven and to make the choice of the house.

Ruth is a woman who knows that the check that comes in isn’t hers but Walter tries to convince her to ask mama for the money. Ruth is trying to save her marriage and is also really worried about her boy Travis who is living in the south side “ghetto” she doesn’t want her boy to keep sleeping in the living room and wants to keep her whole emotional family together.“Mama, something is happening between Walter and me. I don’t know what it is – but he needs something – something I can’t give him anymore. He needs this chance” -4. This quote explains that although Ruth is failing in her marriage she knows that it’s not well and tries to ask mama about the check and tries to give her a hint about his dream.“They said Saturday and this is just Friday and I hope to God you ain’t going to get up here first thing this morning and start talking to me ‘bout no money – cause I ‘bout don’t want to hear it.

Beneatha is a woman who doesn’t care about how her time in money just her future and career she wants to be a woman who earns her “OWN” money but she does need someone to help her pay her tuition so she cares about the check but she is not obsessed with it unlike Walter her brother. Beneatha explains to her mother that she doesn’t help her with that tuition so why should she believe.“I just mean-I’m tired of hearing God all the time. What has he got to do with anything? Does he pay my tuition” this means that she doesn’t have beliefs like her mother but she believes in the person who will pay her tuition. She doesn’t see it as an obsession just a necessity and a way to fund her schooling she sees this money as a way to help her pay the tuition and salvation of her future.

Each of these characters sees this check/money differently Walter sees it as the new business and more money than their Ruth Walters wife she sees it as Mama money because she has been with Sr Walter throughout his years and Beanetha a future of promises. Money and materialism are ineffective because although you have clothes and are from a cheap store it’s not enough and needs more or a house you are living in isn’t enough. Tuition this when Money comes to mind you think of how much will be left or what can I buy these are all the questions that come to mind but when you have a check from a loved one you don’t think about what that loved one would want for the whole family only to think about yourself or kids or what you can buy Just like Walter he wants to be able to afford pearls or home but where they belong not in a neighborhood where people are not present. Money and Materials are valueless having a new phone or popular home is just dumb there doesn’t need to be social status or class.
