Every year, the lights become brighter and the music becomes more festive. Every December, we look forward to a season of joy, no matter how commercialized it may be. For many of us, “Christmas” is not just a word – it is an event that we have been anticipating all year long. It is always a wonderful time of the year and all people love celebrating it every single year. There is no better gift than having access to our families and friends. They all make the event a special one by spending time together, catching up on old stories, and exchanging gifts. It is that time of the year when we reflect on all that has happened over the past twelve months. Moreover, it is a time when we embrace the "never ending" hope that the next year will bring us something better.

Since I was young, Christmas has always had a special place in my heart. Celebrating it is part of growing up for me. It was always one of the highlights of the year and I have always looked forward to it every December. I remember how excited we all got when Christmas was just around the corner. We would start planning and do everything that we could to make it a memorable one. But this year feels different to me than all the years before. Things really were not easy this year and still not as good compared to last year, like when we were not able to go out and do all the things we wanted to do with our friends and extended families. We cannot go to local restaurants and other places because of the threat of the pandemic. And therefore, in order to protect ourselves from it, we stay indoors as much as possible. There were also times when we felt sad and lonely, but that did not stop us from celebrating the special day. We were determined to at least have a fantastic day together with our loved ones, even if it was just at home. Christmas this year, even though it feels not as joyful as it used to be for me, I still do my best to focus on the reason for the season.

This season is not just about gifts we have received. It is also another time of year when we can give to those who are less fortunate. Just recently, on December 24, the church I’m part of organized a gift giving activity for those people who do not have anything to eat for Christmas. It makes me feel warm seeing their smiles and gratitude for the small help we gave them. Even though they may not be family and friends, they are still people that need to be loved and taken care of. In fact, all of us should be thankful that we can still help others in their time of need. Through them, God has reminded me that there is so much more to this world than what meets the eye.

Christmas comes to remind us of the most incredible gift God ever gave us. The present circumstances, no matter how difficult, will never change that one great miracle on that holy silent night. As I look back over the past months, I am amazed at all the wonderful things that have happened – good and bad – but most importantly, all the things I have been able to accomplish. 2021 was a year of change for me as well. I have learned so many things and started to appreciate the little things God has given me. It is a time when we can look forward to the future and hope to be a better person. It is also an opportunity for us to make changes in our lives that we have been putting off. We can start the New Year with something different, something better. Our families are the ones who are part of our everyday lives and they have seen us grow up into what we have become today. What they think about us matters because it helps us be aware of how we should behave every day.

Finally, Christmas is a time to forget about stressors and focus on peace, love, and happiness. It's a chance to learn from our mistakes, nourish our souls, build memories with those close to us, and show our appreciation for life. This past year has been a big one for us, and although there have been challenges, there will be new chances to change. We should be thankful that we at least made it through, because  matter how difficult it was, we survived and have been given another chance. No matter what our circumstances may be, we should never lose hope in Him and have faith that one day He will bring us to a better place.
