“Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor” What would you do if you were forced to kill to win and  survive? Imagine people watching you trying to survive, while others are trying to hunt and kill you. Hunger Games is all about killing to survive. When losing means death and victory means fortune . You're being hunted by others which you have prepared your whole life for if you get called in the reaping. You sacrifice everything just for the entertainment of others. Through her famous novel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen displays the qualities of a true hero through the selflessness she displays by taking Prim's place at the reaping, fighting with courage in the Hunger Games, and using her intelligence to survive and help others.

One of the first steps of the heroic journey that Katniss Everdeen through selflessness she displays by taking Prim’s place at the reaping.  Suzanne Collins writes, “Primrose Everdeen, where are you dear? Well come on up.” Prim with a scared looking face , “NO” ! I gasped “I volunteer I volunteer I volunteer as a tribute” says katniss” (pg 22). This Quote indicates just as prim gets unlucky and has been selected in the reaping, Katniss volunteers to serve as the female tribute for District 12 in the Hunger Games. Since her sister was just twelve years old and was a sensitive person that had difficulty with any type of violence she knew her sister didn’t stand a chance to survive. As a result that she displays by putting her sisters needs before her, it is clear that katniss’s journey Contains the heroic step of selflessness

Another part of the heroic journey that Katniss displays is fighting with courage in the hunger games.  Suzanne Collins writes, “I’m fast. I can sprint faster than any of the girls in our school although a couple can beat me in distance races. But this forty-yard length, this is what I am built for, I can do this.” This quote indicates that Katniss had courage and was confident in herself. During this time period Katniss had sixty seconds until Hunger Games was about to start. She had courage that she was going to run and win this for her sister. When it started  she ran and fought for her life. As a result that she displays by fighting with everything she has in her , it is clear that Katniss's journey Contains the heroic step of fighting with courage even if it risks her being more injured.

A final step in the heroic evident in Hunger Games is Katniss Everdeen using her intelligence to survive and help others. Suzanne Collins writes, “There’s no sense in putting it off. I take a deep breath, grip the knife handle and bear down as hard as I can. Back, forth, back, forth! The tracker jackers begin to buzz and I hear them coming out. Back, forth, back, forth! A stabbing pain shoots through my knee.” This quote indicates that Katniss did have intelligence , she knew that there was a big risk in cutting that brunch down with the deadly wasp but she did what she had to survive even if it was with a couple of stings. Since rue pointed at the nest of wasp it was the only idea she had to get out of the tree. The next morning she warned rue that she was dropping the nest so she protected rue. Rue ran and the only one that died was glimmer because she got stinger way too many times. As a result that she displays by doing what's best for rue , it is clear that Katniss's journey Contains the heroic step of using her intelligence to survive and help others.

Therefore, Katniss Everdeen displays the qualities of a true hero through the selflessness she displays by taking Prim's place at the reaping, fighting with courage in the Hunger Games, and using her intelligence to survive and help others. Hunger Games is all about hunting people down to survive and for others. Your whole life you have been prepared  for when you turn twelve because if you get chosen in the reaping you have to go to the Hunger Games and fight others to survive. You can do impossible things even if you might not think you can but only if you work hard enough for it. Perseverance counts in times that you face challenges.
