Setting is the time and place of an action. It includes all of the details like, the year, time of day, and sometimes weather. In the drama The Diary of Anne Frank, the Franks, the Van Danns, and Mr. Dussel all go into hiding in a small Annex, due to the Holocaust and WWII. During their two years in the Annex, they constantly worry about the Nazi's or someone else discovering them, because they are Jews. The setting of the war and the tension of being found by the Nazi's affects Mrs. Van Dann, Mr. Van Daan, and Anne in the drama, The Diary of Anne Frank.

The drama states:

“MR. VAN DAAN. So we just wait here until we die?

MRS. VAN DAAN. [Hysterically] I can’t stand it! I’ll kill myself! I’ll kill myself!”

This illustrates that Mrs. Vaan is so infuriated with having to be in hiding and living in fear that she is willing to kill herself. Even though she says it in a hysterical manner, the reader can still determine that she is frightened. This evidence proves the setting of the war and the tension of being found by the Nazi’s affects Mrs. Van Daan, because she does not want to constantly have to live in fear and would rather kill herself. The setting of the war is causing her to think negativaly about life.

The drama states:

“MR. VAN DAAN. [To Mr. Kraler] Just a little - discussion over the advisability of selling this coat. As I have often reminded Mrs. Van Daan, it’s very selfish of her to keep it when people outside are in such desperate need of clothing…”

This illustrates that Mr. Van Daan wants to sell the coat to make money out of it, because prices of gone up due to the war. He thinks by selling it, it will support them for food and other necesities. This evidence proves the setting of the war and the tension of being found by the Nazi’s affects Mr. Van Daan, because is it were not for the war, he would have never though of selling Mrs. Van Daan’s coat to help with money problems. Not only is he eager to sell it for the money, but because of how many people are in need of clothing.

The drama states:

“ANNE: We’re young, Margot and Peter and I! You grownups have had you chance! But look at us… If we begin thinking of all the horror in the world, we’re lost!”

This shows that Anne is agitated that because of the war and them having to be in hiding, it is ruining her, Margot, and Peter’s lives, since they are all still young. The grownups, however, have already had their chance of living. This evidence proves the setting of the war and the tension of being found by the Nazi’s affects Anne, because all she wants to do is be able to enjoy being young, but she has to be in hiding. Anne does not find it fair that the grownups are taking their rage on them, when they still have not been able to see the real world.

In result, the setting of the war and the tension of being found by the Nazi’s affects Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, and Anne in the drama The Diary of Anne Frank. First, Mrs. Van Daan is willing to kill herself, due to having to always live in fear ever since in hiding. Second, Mr. Van Daan wants to sell Mrs. Van Daan’s fur coat in order to help support them during the crisis of the war. Finally, Anne is upset that because of the war and having to be in hiding it is causing her, Margot, and Peter to not be able to have the chance of experiencing life. This together shows how the setting of the war and the tension of being found by the Nazi’s affects Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, and Anne.
