“Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body.” -Seneca.  My childhood when comes to battles my mentality was like that of Goku's from the dragon ball anime series. My battles however were chess battles, while the other had physical fights. The dragon ball series was an action world anime centered around martial arts and the mystical art of ki. These two statements seem drastically different at first. What we both share however, is the desire to seek out challenges to test our skills. This key aspect driven us into risky situations, forced us to learn new ways to combat our opponents, and forged us into better strategists.

The desire to seek out challenges had driven us into risky situations. In the show, Goku had constantly put whole worlds in danger. Goku is an alien superhero battling against these world-destroying super villains. Goku belongs to a warlike bloodthirsty alien race known as the Saiyans. He always keeps dragging out battles to unnecessary proportions. One example of this is when he was battling a very powerful intergalactic alien ruler named Frieza. They were fighting on an alien planet called Namek which was home to a different race oppressed by Frezia's army known as the Namekians. Goku was losing to Frieza at first, But then was absolutely dominating once he had transformed into his Super Saiyan form. The Super Saiyan form is basically a transformation that results in changes In his physical cabblitates as well as his appearance. In this transformation, he is much more muscular and his hair standing up on his head shaped like a cone of fire. In this form, he is astronomically stronger, faster, and more durable than he was without it. In this form, he had the advantage and could have just killed him straight from the start. Instead, he just toyed around with him the entire time until he had enough. Unfortunately for everyone, Frieza felt so humiliated from this one-sided fight, that he fired a small black ball of energy from his hand which made a small crater in the ground. This small ball vaporized everything in its path including the core of the planet. This gave them 5 minutes until the whole planet exploded. Shockingly, This didn’t stop Goku from dragging out the battle until the last minute. Luckily He wins, kills Frieza, and barely escapes the planet on time. Everyone else remaining died in the explosion of the planet.

When comes to me, growing up when it comes to chess battles, I can be very much like Goku in his drive to fight new opponents. The stronger the opponent the more interesting the outcome. One time I was at a tournament set in a church. I had constantly put my winning streak in jeopardy by constantly choosing to battle the toughest opponents there. In this tournament, I couldn’t afford one loss, or I would lose the whole tournament.

The desire to seek out challenges had forced us to learn ways to combat our opponents. In the show, Goku would constantly find new mentors throughout the series.  He had tons of different mentors, some were gods others were aliens. There was A time earlier in the series where Goku's home race was coming over to invade the earth. The Sayains is a mostly evil race with Goku being the only good one thanks to being raised on earth. While he was growing up on planet earth, he had already been trained by A bunch of human masters. These masters taught him how to use a magical power called ki. The power of ki grants the people in the show numerous abilities ranging from flying and fighting at the speed of light or even beyond, shoot world-shattering energy blast from their hands, and enhancing physical capabilities like strength, durability, and more. Later he then went to search for the king of Kai’s in order to be trained by him. A kai is basically a very powerful alien god race. They usually avoid intruding in the affairs of mortals, but Goku was the only exception.

When I used to play chess online, I had learned multiple techniques from numerous opponents. Sometimes my opponents would use a new tactic that threw me off guard. When this happens I had used the same tactic against me at different opponents. I had also viewed other people’s chess battles and incorporate these techniques as well. I also would check to see online for more techniques to use.

The desire to seek out challenges forged us into better strategists. Goku has shown some of his strategic ability throughout the show. A good example is when he was fighting against Frieza before his miraculous Super Saiyan transformation. When He got blasted into a lake. Goku looking upward noticed the flying Frieza was having trouble looking for him. He then suddenly realized that Frieza didn’t know how to sense his presence. In the story of dragon ball at this point in time, the main cast of good guys knows to sense people's presence by using their ki. This ability enables the user to intuitively sense their opponent no matter where he is at. This Issue had forced Frieza to use his eyes to spot where Goku is Hiding at. Goku thought up a plan to take advantage of the situation. The result was him using a bunch of magical energy blasts from his hands to make it seem that he at a different place than he is really at.

I had become a better strategist because I was able to develop different strategies when I was playing online chess. These different strategies had helped me win the game. If my opponent's piece standing in my way I had found a way to nullify it. If My opponent cornered me into a trap I had found a way out of it.

In conclusion, Me the young chess player, and Goku the hero from the marshal art-centric dragon ball series may seem to lack noticeable similarities on the surface. What we both have in common is that we both seek out challenges to test our skills. This key aspect had driven us into risky situations, forced us to learn ways to combat our opponents, and forged us into better strategists. “The vast majority of us imagine ourselves as like literature people or math people. But the truth is that the massive processor known as the human brain is neither a literature organ or a math organ. It is both and more.”
