Hawaii by Maluma Song Analysis Essay

The meaning behind the song "Hawaii" by Maluma is about a guy who sees his ex-girlfriend with someone else. To realize he is still in love with her and is even a bit jealous of their new love, His ex-girlfriend posts photos of them together on vacation. He finds it a bit intimidating and a bit jealous of them. Throughout the song, his emotions change from not caring that she found a new love interest to wanting her back. In the song, he tries to convince her to come back and see how perfect together they are. Maluma also tries to reason with her, how couples fight and how things will improve. He also states that no one will ever love her like him. While his ex-girlfriend only posts photos of their vacation to make him jealous and does not seem interested in coming back. She only shows him what he is missing. All though he was only interested in her again after seeing her with someone new. By performing a rhetorical analysis of Hawaii by Maluma one can find a theme of jealousy and love. The use of rhetorical devices is also shown such as anaphora, metaphor, and simile.

The “Hawaii” song uses the rhetorical device anaphora. Anaphora is when a phrase or verse is used repeatedly throughout the text or song. He used anaphora to emphasize how much she is better off with him. The part of the song he uses is "It could be that you're missing nothing, nothing apparently Vacation in Hawaii, my congratulations "(Maluma) meaning she can look happy on the outside when in reality that is not the case. Which Maluma wanted to emphasize that more than the rest of the song. In the music, the verse is applied about four times. So the writer showed he loved her by stating that only he knows the real her and not her new love. He especially expressed how great of a couple they made. This part of the song also shows a  bit of his jealousy towards his ex-girlfriend's new love. He showed it by wanting to exclude her from any type of new love that was not from him. Maluma also states how he knew that she was purposely showing off ,to make him jealous because she knew he would see the photos of them together. The songwriter Maluma did not only show anaphora in his music but also metaphor.

The song by Maluma shows a rhetorical device metaphor. A metaphor is when a word or phrase is used to refer to an object or action not literal. Maluma used an example of metaphor when he said," The picture you posted with him saying that he was your heaven" explains how her new love means the world to her now. He seemed jealous of the photo she posted of them together for him to have pointed it out. It made him jealous because she could of easily just posted the photo without the metaphor. But she did, expressed all the love she has for someone new to make him jealous. Of course, Maluma then justifies how he is not too worried because others saw her crying for him, and how he was their first. Just because he was their first he relies on it being harder for her to forget him. He also goes in on how her new love mite treat her well but still is not him. In the song not only evidence of anaphora and metaphor is shown but also simile.

In the song” Hawaii”, the rhetorical device simile is used. The rhetorical device simile is when two different things are compared by using the word like or as. He used a simile when he compared his love with his ex-girlfriend‘s new love. The point used in the song was "I know that it will go well for you, but he doesn't love you as I love you"(Maluma). Since he is one of a kind just like everyone else in this world, she will not find someone to love her just like he did. He knows that her new love will treat her well but could never give her the type of love he gave her. Expressing to her again how things are better with him. This also shows he loves her but still is jealous of their relationship. He then tries to bring up their past and how great together they were. He tries to express how sorry he is, if he did something wrong and how they could work on things to become once again the great couple they used to be.

The songwriter Maluma uses the rhetorical devices anaphora, metaphor, and simile to create an overall meaning of the song “Hawaii”. He used anaphora by repeating part of the song on how he knows her true feelings about her new love. He used metaphor to show her that he still loves her and can provide her more than he can. Maluma used a simile to compare old love with new and how it's not comparable. It helped by getting a better understanding of the lyrics of the song and express more in detail his emotions. Especially on how Malumas's emotions changed back and forward from jealousy and still being in love with his ex-girlfriend. He tries to reason and show how things are better with him throughout the song. While his ex-girlfriend is no longer interested and just hoping to make him jealous. In which Maluma then gets the overall message.In which the song states we do not know what we have until it is gone. Just like the songwriter, Maluma did not miss his ex-girlfriend until he saw her with someone new.
