Industrialists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century strived at making a mass profit in their various corporations. They used numerous deviating tactics to reign supreme over the rest of the country. These men were in fact so powerful that some people considered their strategies were causing corruption and were manipulative to society. Others believed they were just exercising a fair approach towards their enterprises. Controversy quickly arose on whether these men were to be considered captains of industry or robber barons. In my opinion I believe that these entrepreneurs were captains of industry and were just trying to become better than the rest of their competitors.

Although they were very successful men, their money was earned fairly rather than through manipulative practices. Document C proves this point by showing millionaires should be credited for not only bad, but for greatness too. As stated by Andrew Carnegie “It will be a great mistake for the community to shoot the millionaires, for they are the bees that make the most honey, and contribute most to the hive even after they have gorged themselves full”. So these men may have been above the rest, but they still provided jobs back to the economy and many historical entertainment buildings. Therefore showing they were not the robber barons they were portrayed to be.

Next, throughout document C Andrew Carnegie goes more in depth about how these men are necessary to the support of the poor. He states “to produce the most beneficial results for the community the man of wealth thus becoming the mere trustee and agent for his poor brethren bringing to their service his superior wisdom, experience and ability to administer, doing for them better than they would or could do for themselves.”  This statement shows these industrialists were needed in order to guide the poor and to lead them further than what would have been possible for them to do on their own. Also, providing evidence that these men were not just out to get the poverty ridden and middle class but to assist them through a livable lifestyle.

Finally, due to the great success these men dealt with, unwarranted backlash came into effect. Throughout document F Historian B states “Although people like Rockefeller used methods that were ethically questionable, the kind of monopolistic control that they exercised was a natural response to the cutthroat competition of the period and reflected the trend toward business consolidation in all industrial nations.” This is proof that these entrepreneurs were not just out to get the populus and make them do the dirty work. They were just trying to keep up with the rest of the competition and to improve their own success to the maximum. Also, this industrialization improved the United States in a military aspect and in the Urbanization with buildings and bridges.

To conclude all that has been said, these Industrialists were not robber barons but rather captains of industry. They became very successful due to the fact that they thrived in productivity. Although these men were steps above the rest they used their money to do good such as giving back to the community. By using this power for good they industrialized the country in their competition and meant no harm along the way.
