The Lottery by Shirley Jackson Book Review

The story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, is about a small cozy village where they hold a lottery once a year in the town square and whoever was picked got, to get stoned by everyone in the town, even the small children. The author develops the plot to create irony in the choice of the title, how the characters, and the concept of fairness. 

To begin with, what helps create irony is the title which has an effect on the story. The title  The Lottery helped create an illusion that the story was going to be amazing, but therefore it means the total opposite. Leaving the audience surprised that it wasn't what they thought.  In other words the text explains”THE morning of June 27th was clear and sunny.” Making the readers predict that something good is going to happen making it important to understand the text. These affect the title had on the story and is what helps create irony. Making the horrific tradition the opposite of what we expect out of a lottery. That tration was that you pick from a box and if the man of the house picks the dot then, the whole family comes up and draws. And if you get the black dot you have to go to the middle and people throw rocks at you till you're dead.

In the text it states that Mrs,Hutchions says'' Clean forgot what day it was.” Also there is a guy named Mr.Summers who we are introduced to on page 1 paragraph 4. That year Mrs.Hutchions almost forgot but she ended up being the one killed. As it was about to happen they gave her own baby a rock to throw at her. Near the end of her time she stated “This isn't far!” taken back of all the things she said before. Leading on to Mr.Summers. We started to learn about him in paragraph 4 and that he had no children and it was only him and his wife. Therefore making the town feel bad for him. Leaving us to why it is important and is related to irony. Mrs. Hutchions didn't care until it was involved with her.She even wanted to bring her own family with her just to save her self. Mr. Summers you would expect to be a guy who doesn't draw who is going to die each year. Therefore using irony.
