The coldest temperature recorded in Wisconsin was negative fifty-five degrees with Moscow barely falling behind with negative forty-two (Study WI ranks 9th in coldest recorded temperature, 2020) (Moscow Braces for Coldest Week of 2018, 2018). Living in areas where the weather is so brutal can be costly to both the individual and the community. The United States, Wisconsin and Russia, Moscow are on opposite sides of the world, yet both are known for their harsh winters making heat, plumbing, housing, and a reasonable cost of living a necessity when living in either area.

Central heating means something altogether different to a Russian than it would to a Wisconsinite. In Moscow their heating system is a large pipe that connects throughout the entirety of the city, and they only pay seven dollars a flat (Warmth cycle: How Moscow flats are heated, 2017). This might sound appealing but there are some downsides to this as well. If you live close to the plant and are the first house that the pipe is in contact with it will be extremely warm whereas if you’re the last house is might still be freezing in your home (Warmth cycle: How Moscow flats are heated, 2017). In Wisconsin everyone has their own thermostat they can control and pays on average four hundred and seventy-seven dollars for the winter season (Boulton, 2019).

Frozen plumbing bursting pipes are a nightmare for those who live in a cold climate. Luckily for Moscow due to the heating system it works for their pluming as well. Because Wisconsin’s plumbing and heat are separate precautions must be made (Flaherty, 2022). Most of these precautions are taught at a young age and are a part of Wisconsin’s culture such as make sure your sink is dripping and leave your cabinet open so the heat can get to the pipe (Flaherty, 2022).

Insulation goes a long way to help bring down your heating bill and keeping the heat inside. Wisconsin has codes and regulations that must be adhered to in order to buy and sell housing. (Wisconsin Building Energy Code, 2016). This is to make sure that no one is buying a house that they could potentially freeze in.

The cost of living in Moscow is thirty-five percent cheaper than in Milwaukee Wisconsin. (Cost of living in Moscow (Russia) is 35% cheaper than in Milwaukee, 2022). This is not surprising given what has been in this essay so far.

The heating in Russia is cheaper but not necessarily better. Plumbing is again cheaper and not as prone to bursting but Wisconsin is cleaner. Wisconsin has Insulation standards but in Moscow it seems to be for of a way of life. The cost of living is defiantly more in the states than in Russia especially with what we know from looking at the utility bills. Both areas although having similar weather handle almost everything completely different but work for each area.
